What are the characteristics of glass insulators?

After vacuum injection, the continuous pulling and extrusion of epoxy glass pulling rods is formed after the glass fibers are impregnated with epoxy resin and cured. The insulators used in overhead lines commonly include pin insulators, disc insulators, suspension porcelain bottle insulators, porcelain cross arms, rod insulators, and tension insulators, etc.

After vacuum injection, the continuous pull-pull epoxy glass pulling rod is formed by impregnating glass fibers with epoxy resin and curing. The insulators used in overhead lines commonly include pin insulators, disc insulators, suspension porcelain bottle insulators, porcelain cross arms, rod insulators, and tension insulators.

The core rod of the composite insulator is formed by extruding epoxy resin and glass fiber. The outer surface of the glass fiber is bonded with epoxy resin, where the load is borne by the glass fiber. Rainwater and moisture can easily form acidic liquids under high electric fields. If the sealing at the end of the FS355 composite insulator is poor or the outer sheath is damaged, the acidic liquid will seep into the core rod along the interface of the sheath and core rod, leading to the swelling of the epoxy resin until it cracks and disintegrates. As the epoxy resin matrix is damaged, the acid and water medium erode the bonding surface between the epoxy resin and glass fiber, causing the bonding surface to delaminate, allowing the acid and water medium to directly contact the surface of the glass fiber. This interacts with alkaline oxides such as CO and MgO in the glass fiber. These alkaline oxides react with the acidic liquid, forming high-stress areas in the glass fiber lattice, leading to micro-cracks and a decline in the mechanical properties of the glass fiber until fracture.

Silicone rubber and the core rod are a composite material, so this type of insulator is called a composite insulator. However, from the structure of this insulator, it is composed of two materials, forming a composite structure; therefore, composite insulators can also be considered in terms of their structure.

Ordinary insulators are usually made of glass or ceramics. The mechanical strength of the surface layer of glass insulators is high, and the transparency of glass makes it easy to detect small cracks and various internal defects and damages during visual inspection. Ceramic insulators have good electrical and mechanical properties, and assembly is flexible. However, defects are not easy to detect. The zero-value detection of ceramic insulators requires climbing the tower for individual inspections, which consumes a lot of manpower and resources, and the probability of accidents caused by lightning strikes and dirty flashovers is high.
