Throughput capability
This is mainly reflected in the ability of the lightning arrester to absorb various lightning overvoltages, power frequency transient overvoltages, and operating overvoltages.
Protection characteristics
Zinc oxide lightning arresters are electrical products used to protect various electrical equipment in power systems from overvoltage damage, with good protection performance. The excellent nonlinear volt-ampere characteristics of the zinc oxide varistor allow only a few hundred microamperes of current to pass under normal operating voltage, making it easy to design into a gapless structure, which features good protection performance, light weight, and small size. When overvoltage intrudes, the current flowing through the varistor rapidly increases, while limiting the amplitude of the overvoltage and releasing the energy of the overvoltage. After that, the zinc oxide varistor returns to a high-resistance state, allowing the power system to operate normally.
Sealing performance
The lightning arrester components use a composite outer jacket with good aging performance and airtightness, employing measures such as controlling the compression of the sealing ring and increasing the application of sealing glue. The ceramic outer jacket serves as the sealing material, ensuring reliable sealing and stable performance of the lightning arrester.
Mechanical performance
The following three factors are mainly considered: the seismic force endured; the wind pressure acting on the lightning arrester; the maximum allowable tensile force on the conductor at the top of the lightning arrester.
Pollution flashover performance
Gapless zinc oxide lightning arresters have high pollution flashover performance.
*The standard specifies the creepage distance levels as follows: Level II for moderately polluted areas: creepage distance 20mm/kV; Level III for heavily polluted areas: creepage distance 25mm/kV; Level IV for severely polluted areas: creepage distance 31mm/kV.
High operational reliability
The reliability of long-term operation depends on the quality of the product and whether the selection of the product is reasonable. The main factors affecting product quality are: the rationality of the overall structure of the lightning arrester; the volt-ampere characteristics and aging resistance of the zinc oxide varistor; the sealing performance of the lightning arrester.
Power frequency withstand capability
Due to various reasons in the power system, such as single-phase grounding, long line capacitance effects, and load shedding, the power frequency voltage may rise or produce high-amplitude transient overvoltages. The lightning arrester has the ability to withstand a certain increase in power frequency voltage for a certain period of time.
